How to treat fleas in your carpet

Fleas in your carpet is a serious issue when it comes to flea infestations. Fleas don’t normally hide around wood or tile floors. They prefer wet, moist, dark, and secure areas such as carpeting, clothes or pet fur. Its important to treat your infestation as soon as you can. This article will cover the basics to treating fleas in your carpet.

Steam Cleaning

I’ve found this to be the most effective and chemical free way to treat fleas in your carpet. Fleas bury deep down into carpeting and usually eggs are hiding deep in your carpet. Fleas Steamers can penetrate the deep parts of your carpeting not only killing fleas but providing a clean, new looking carpet.

Flea steamers project steam at high enough temperatures to kill fleas in all parts of the flea life cycle. Not all flea killing methods can kill fleas in every part of the flea life cycle. Steaming does though which it was the first solution I listed because it’s the best. If you don’t have a fleas steamer I suggest buying one here. This is an amazing flea steamer that will get the job done.

Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous Earth is another great way to remove fleas from carpet. This is a cheap method that’s worked for me in the past. Just remove your smaller furniture from your living room and spread the diatomaceous earth evenly throughout your carpet. Make sure your entire carpeting is covered so you can get every single spot that fleas may hide.

Once the entire carpet is covered leave the diatomaceous earth in your carpet for up to 12 hours. When the twelve hour period is up just vacuum it up until the diatomaceous earth is gone. Repeat this process once a week until the flea infestation is gone. If you want to learn more about diatomaceous earth and what it it check out my diatomaceous earth article here.

Flea Sprays

This is very effective but can be dangerous if you buy the wrong type of spray. Various flea sprays have been known to have chemicals in them that are poisonous. When buying a flea spray make sure you’re buying a spray that is all natural so it doesn’t harm you, your family, or your pet. I suggest buying Vet’s Best Natural Flea Spray.

The easiest way to use flea spray is really simple. You just spray the fleas spray throughout the infested carpeting and let it sit. The spray will do that work for you killing all the fleas in the area its sprayed.

Salt

This is a natural and easy way to kill fleas in your carpet. It’s simple and the most convenient the only problem is if you have a lot of carpeting  it will take a lot of spray.

Salt works the same way as diatomaceous earth, you spread it throughout the house and let it sit. The finer the salt the better it will work. If you want you can also use baking soda mixed with salt to make a larger mixture.

Clean your pets bedding

If you have pets make sure that you clean there bedding as well as cleaning the carpet. The infestation generally starts with pets. When taking your pets out to use the restroom they will likely bring fleas into the house with them. To keep this from happening you can use flea drops or flea shampoo.

To clean pet bedding you can put it in the washer with a small amount of dish detergent or laundry detergent with a small fragrance, then add a cup of baking soda. I suggest using cold water to wash it. This will kill all of the fleas in your pets bedding.
