Flea shampoo is a great way to remove fleas from your pets fur. Flea shampoos have chemicals in the designed to kill fleas. Some flea shampoos also contains chemicals that allow long term flea prevention. This can keep fleas off your pet for 4 weeks! Below I’m going to show you my favorite fleas shampoos for both cats and dogs. If you want to learn more about flea shampoo you can read my article here.

Best Flea Shampoo For Your Pet

1. Adams Plus Flea & Tick Shampoo with Precor for Dogs and Cats

Adams Plus is the best flea shampoo I’ve used. It not only kills adult fleas but also kills flea eggs. Not a lot of products kill adult fleas and fleas eggs. Adams Plus kills both and does a great job of it too. It’s gentle on yours and your pets skin, smells great, and is relatively cheap only costing a mere 12 dollars!  Thats an cheap investment for a product with such great quality.

If you have a cat as well as a dog this is a great option for you. Adams plus works on cats and dogs alike so you can take out two birds with one stone.

My only complaint is a small one. It does tend to dry out your pets fur so I suggest using a conditioner. This conditioner can be applied while bathing your pet or sprayed on afterwards.

Buy on Amazon now!

2. Advantage Flea Treatment Shampoo for Dogs

Advantage always has great flea treatment products. You can use their flea shampoo or flea drops and both work like magic killing fleas either on contact or within a few hours. Your pet will be flea free in no time!

I have noticed that it doesn’t keep fleas off my dog for as long as it claims too. Advantage says it will keep fleas off your pet for up to 100 days. Usually I find fleas on my dog again after the first month so I have to reapply it about once a month.

Seeing as some flea shampoos can only keep fleas off your pet for a week or two this isn’t a problem for me.

 3. Vet’s Best Anti Flea Easy Spray Shampoo

If your pet doesn’t like baths and tends to make things very difficult, this is a great option for you. Vets Best created this flea shampoo so you can spray it on your dog or cat instead of having to scrub. It works really well, its cheap, and easy to use

Just like Adams flea shampoo it can be used on cats and dogs. When sprayed it doesn’t just target adult fleas but will also kill any flea eggs that are caught in your pets fur.

For pets with sensitive skin this product will work best because of its mix of clove, and peppermint oil to soothe skin irritation.

Flea traps are a great way to take out fleas and treat and infestation. You can build traps at home with common household items or you can buy traps depending on the time you have and the quality you want. Electric flea traps are the most common traps. When I use flea traps I prefer to use electric flea traps.

 What are electric flea traps?

Electric flea traps are made from a sticky substance that’s placed under a warm light. The traps are plugged into a wall and set out to attract fleas. The Warmth of the light pulls the fleas towards the light where they will be caught in the sticky substance place underneath the light.

When making your own electric flea trap the sticky substance underneath the light is a mixture of water and soap. If you just put water under the light the fleas will be able to escape that is why you must put soap into it. Store bought flea traps are much easier to maintain.

When using a store bought flea trap its much easier to maintain. When you purchase a flea trap it comes with a replaceable tar like substance on a tray. When the tray is becoming to full just take out the tray then replace it with a new tray.

How to use an Electric flea trap

Not only are electric flea traps very effective but they’re also easy to use. The first thing you’ll need to do is find an electric outlet in an area around where your pet spends a lot of time whether its on the couch, your bedroom, or near their pet bed. Leave it there until the container becomes full. Once its full of fleas change out the sticky tray and replace it with a new once so you can continue trapping fleas.

What flea trap should I buy?

The Victor M230 Ultimate Flea Trap is my personal favorite purchasable flea trap. This flea trap contains absolutely no poisons so it isn’t harmful to pets or children. Its great to have because it can become a permanent necessity around the house that is reusable until its broken. Once its placed you don’t need to worry about it at all except to replace the tray when it fills up. The fleas will gather around it like its a magical portal to a amazing world of fleas!

Benefits

  • Non-poisonous, odorless flea trap safe to use around children and pets
  • Patented design uses color, heat, light, and sweet odor to lure fleas; attracts fleas from 30 feet away in every direction
  • Super Grabber glue holds fleas fast for easy monitoring and removal
  • Enables safe placement around children and pets; comes fully assembled and ready to use
  • Package includes 1 trap and 2 glue discs; refills also available

Homemade flea trap

Making a flea trap at home can be pretty effective too, not only is it effective but its incredibly easy to do. Ill teach you how to make a flea trap for your home. If you want to learn how to make more flea traps click here to read my Guide to flea traps.

Lamp Trap- The lamp trap just uses a lamp with a bright bulb and a bowl of soapy water to catch the fleas.

To start, get a bowl and fill it with water then add a dash of soap and mix it around until the soap is mixed in. Try to prevent making bubbles when stirring the soap in. The soap will keep the fleas in the bowl, preventing them from escaping.

Once you have the bowl of soap and water take a lamp and place it on the ground above the bowl of soapy water. Angle the lamp so that the light shines onto the bowl.

If you don’t have a lamp you can also place the bowl against a wall underneath a night light. The light will draw the fleas to the bowl where they will be caught and die.

We’ve all been in a situation where our pets are itching like crazy because their covered in fleas. If you arent sure how to help them, theres an easy solution called flea shampoo. It’s designed to be put on your pet to kill the fleas hiding in your pets fur. Not only does it kill the fleas living on your pet but it prevent more fleas from jumping on your pet and making the itching worse.

What is Flea Shampoo

Flea shampoo is a form of flea treatment designed to kill the fleas on your pet’s skin. They are available for different pets such as dogs, cats, ferrets, etc. When choosing a flea shampoo make sure you use the right kind of shampoo for your pet. What I mean is use dog shampoo on dogs and cat shampoo on cats.

This seem obvious but people tend to make this mistake a lot. You need to make sure you use the right shampoo or it can severely irritate your pets skin. If you have to use another type of shampoo that isn’t for your pet make sure to consult a veterinarian first.

Flea shampoos contain strong chemicals that rinse the fleas from your dog or cat. These chemicals last on your pet for about 2-3 weeks. This is intended to prevent the fleas from attacking your helpless pet again.

Uses of Flea Shampoo

Flea shampoo is a effective yet temporary fix for a fleas infestation of a pet. The flea shampoo will prevent fleas for a few weeks after used but it isn’t a permanent solution so don’t be surprised if the fleas return later.

Flea shampoos sometimes use harsh chemicals so don’t wash your pet with it on a daily basis. This will cause skin damage that can resort in irritation or a rash.

Chemicals found in Flea dip

7184516876_fde0fe9cd1_bSome of the chemicals found in these treatments include: Permethrims; Fipronil; Diatomaceous Earth, Amitraz; among others.

When using flea shampoos you should read the instructions carefully to avoid any incidents. Not all shampoos work with your pet. Cats for instance are very sensitive to chemicals so before washing them you should visit a local vet for assistance.

Choosing the right shampoo treatment for your pet is very important, seeing as they contain strong chemicals that might irritate your pet’s skin and consequently lead to skin complications. If you are going to use one, please note that they always work best for adult fleas, and never experiment on your pet, seek medical help from a vet.

Buying flea shampoo

Buying flea shampoo can cost anywhere from $10-30 depending on the quality of shampoo that you buy. Considering how well flea shampoo works I think its worth the investment.

You can buy flea shampoo from a local pet store or a veterinarian. If you dont want to go out and buy flea shampoo then you can buy it here for a cheap price.

Fleas are often the scourge of many a pet and their care givers. They not only cause an infestation but bring further risks to the humans leaving both parties itchy, irritated and prone to skin infections and blood shortage.

While prevention is the best remedy to any problem, the inevitable infestation can come from contact with other dogs or even as you walk the pet. Cats too are prone to flea attacks but the size difference means the treatments vary in terms of composition and quantity. The speed at which fleas can reproduce make them a unique adversary and one that must be dealt with swiftly and clinically. The treatments can either be orally or topically administered with other measures advised for a holistic treatment to cure a current infestation and to prevent re-infestation.

1- K9 Advantix II

Click to Get This

The best treatment has been established as a topical medication regime. This is because it is applied directly and also contains an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) which prevents the unborn fleas from maturing into adults, nipping the problem in the bud. Bayer are a pharmaceutical leader in both human and pet needs and they came up with the number one flea killer called K9 Advantix II. This is a topical treatment that is applied at the back or the neck and it works a treat killing the adults and using the IGR to suffocate the eggs and larva around. It has also gained favor as it repels mosquitoes, fleas, ticks and biting flies as well as killing the aforementioned pests making it a nuclear option. The only drawback is it has an uncomfortable texture and smell that can be irritating to humans but more lethally, it is harmful to cats. Thus care is needed for this potent killer but it is worth it for the long term benefits.

2- Advantage II

Click to Get Frontline Plus

The next hotshot is called Advantage II which is designed to have separate medications for cats and dogs. Advantage is a great product that has two components; one that kills adult fleas and the other prevents immature fleas from developing any further. This is replicated in both canine and feline options and as such has found great merit with both veterinarians and pet owners alike. The fact that Advantage pays attention to the various age groups and weight levels of both pets has made it an instant hit with humans and a dreaded nemesis for the fleas. Frontline is another topical medication with respectable results as well as coming in both cat and dog versions. It is quite similar to the two versions before it but does not have the fanatical following from either pet owners or vets to gain a favorable rating, however, it is quite effective. Sentry Natural Defense is also a great option for smaller dogs in the topical department. To find out more about Frontline click here.

3- Capstar

Click to Get Capstar

Oral medications are an option and none has excelled as much as Capstar has. It is adapted for both dogs and cats and there begins its favorability as well as being affordable and an over the counter solution. It caters to cats and dogs of all sizes and weight classes with a simple administration regime yielding maximum results. This is considered a quick relief option as it kills an infestation in as little as thirty minutes and is harmless to everybody involved. It has no side effects for the animal and does not affect fellow pets nor the handler. The only downside is how to get a cat or dog to swallow the pill and this is done mostly by hiding it in food, snacks, peanut jelly or cheese. The companies have made an effort to combat this by releasing beef flavored tablets and soon this will not be an issue.

4- Comfortis

comfortis-for-dogs-1323095067

The darling of veterinary doctors as far as oral medicines are concerned is Comfortis. This is mostly due to the fact that it is a prescription only drug and that it is more potent than Capstar. The drawback here is the potency of Comfortis can cause complications in dogs especially those on Ivermectin based medicine, which combats heartworm. It is also known for its difficulty in ingestion causing discomfort for the animal and vomiting. It is also advised for use for older and heavier pets due to its potency but it is clinical and effective.

5- Flea and Tick Shampoos

Click to get the flea shampoo

Fleas have faced many foes and seen them off either by adapting escaping mechanisms or even getting resistant to certain drugs. The vast majority of generic or home remedies contain pyrethroids like permethrin which can be harmful to cats. The use of flea dips, flea bombs, flea sprays and flea powders are mostly effective initially before becoming redundant. Behavioral treatments are advised too with the use of Oster Oatmeal Naturals Shampoo or Bio-Groom Flea and Tick Shampoo used for bathing and soaking the infested pet. They often require repetitive administration and are too weak to be effective by themselves and as such can be a lifestyle adjustment to help cope pleasantly with treatment for infestation.

6- Flea Away Repellent

Flea Away Repellent is thought to be a great way of halting infestation in its tracks but unless maybe at the onset, is rather more effective as a preventive measure. Four Paws Magic Coat is the old fashioned hard graft solution with a flea comb and can supplement medication superbly. It comes with close knit bristles and a generous handle for extra grip as you knuckle down on the fleas and ticks. While a labor intensive option, very few pests escape the wrath of sweat and graft. The ornamental options are then next up with Scalibor Flea Protector Band infused with Deltamethrin a fantastic option. The drawback has always been it is slow and cerebral meaning the side effects of itching and irritation for the pet are inevitable. The Deltamethrin is usually absorbed into the pet’s system through body oils and fluids, forming a scent that repels the fleas but undetectable to the animal.

Fleas have been the scourge of many a household and as such have been a bother to the pets as well. This is reflected in the variety of remedies out there but with this list, you are sure of results. Do not take our word for it, take the Amazon reviews from pets and most importantly, veterinarians.

Frontline Plus is a type of flea medicine for dogs and cats. In my opinion this is the absolute best medicine available. It’s guaranteed to kill 100% of fleas within the first 12 hours of applying it to your pet. It is also 100% Guaranteed to remove ticks, and chewing lice within the next 48 hours. Frontline plus is usable on dogs, puppies, kittens, and adult cats as long as they are older than 8 weeks.

Frontline Plus contains Fipronil, a broad spectrum insecticide and slow-acting poison that disrupts the central nervous system of fleas, ticks, and chewing lice. It also contains S-Methoprene an insect growth regulator that kills fleas, eggs, and larvae.

Benefits of Frontline Plus

  • Kills all existing fleas on your pet within 12 hours
  • Each application provides a full months protection
  • Also aids in control of Sarcoptic mange infections
  • Great for pets that swim since it’s waterproof
  • Kills ticks and chewing lice

Cautions

Frontline Plus may cause irritation to the applied area. If this is persist stop using it immediately and consult a Veterinarian for information and advice.

How to apply

  • Remove Applicator- Lift and remove the plastic tap to expose the foil backing. Then peel away the foil. You can use scissors to do so
  • Open the applicator- Hold upright with foil tip facing your direction and snap the applicator tip
  • Apply the solution- Part your pet’s hair around the shoulder blades. Place the applicator tip just above your pet’s skin and squeeze. Apply the entire contents within the applicator to a single area around the parted fur. Do not apply to the top of fur coat. Once through applying avoid contact with applied area until dry.

Other Information

Frontline is made for all kinds of pets. You can buy a different kind for each of size dog. You can buy it in packs of one or 6 doses depending on how long you want to use it. I’ve used it on my small sized dog before, I used the 22 pound Frontline because he’s quite a small dog and I saw results within a day. He stopped itching and I used a flea comb to check him for fleas. I didn’t find a single flea on him.

Some customers have said that in some areas there is a strain of fleas that is immune to frontline in that case I would recommend using Advantage for that strand. This is a very rare case though and Frontline will work almost all the time.

There have been some cases of counterfeit frontline products. It’s easy to get them mixed up with the real Frontline, a noticeable difference though is that the counterfeit frontline is measured in the metric system. If you want to buy Frontline I recommend going to Petco or clicking here.
