Most of the time I wouldn’t recommend using a flea fogger or flea bomb in your home. This is because with a flea fogger you’re releasing hazardous chemicals into the air that could linger in your home after use. Sometimes you may need a fogger though. Flea Infestations can grow so large that you need a flea killer that will kill a large amount of fleas really quickly. This is when I suggest flea foggers

Below I’m going to list 3 of my preferred flea foggers that I use when fleas get out of hand. If you have any questions you can ask me using my contact page.

Best Flea Fogger- Raid Flea Fogger

Raid Flea Foggers are a more environmentally friendly flea fogger because they don’t use CFCs which are harmful to the atmosphere. It has really quick killing power so you can set the fogger off while you run to the store.

Not only does it kill fleas while its going off but it controls fleas for up to 4 months provided you are keeping fleas off your pets. If you want a quality, safe, long term flea fogger then the Raid Flea Fogger is what you need.

Hot Shot Flea Bombs

This Flea killer is recommended by a large number of consumers which is proof that its effective and gets the job done. It doesn’t just kill fleas but also other pets such as roaches, and bed bugs.

The Hot Shot Flea Bomb covers a large area making it easier to take out more fleas with less bombs. This is the runner-up for my favorite flea foggers. Its cheap, effective, safe and kills spiders and other insects along with fleas.

I do suggest putting a towel or newspaper  below the fogger though in case it leaks onto the floor.

Buy on Amazon now!

Zodiac Flea Bomb

This is a flea bomb that take fleas out from the root. The Zodiac Flea Bomb has Insect Growth Regulator in it which not only kills adult fleas, but also kills flea eggs and larva too.

The packaging says that it can prevent flea infestations for up to 7 months. I haven’t used Zodiac enough to be able to tell if this actually works but in my opinion thats a little far fetched.

The zodiac flea bomb works great to get ride of fleas quickly and effectively. I do recommend buying multiple bombs though and placing one in each room of your home that has a window. This makes the bomb all the more effective.

Steps to take when using foggers

1. Open cabinets and doors to rooms to make sure the foggers get into every place fleas could hide.

2. Cover dishes, food, and aquariums if you have any. You can cover clothes too but thats not absolutely dire.

3. Make sure everyone is out of the house while the foggers go off. Do not return until time specified on fogger.

4. Read the fogger instructions because different foggers go off for different times.

5. When you return open up all windows in your home to make sure everything vents out.

6. Wipe down counters and tables around the house. If you have small children wipe down anything they can put in their mouth such as toys, or utensils.

For more information read up the foggers instructions.

When looking for ways to get rid of fleas borax is something you’ve probably heard of. There’s a lot of talk about it being really bad to use and some talk of it being safe to use. What should we believe?

I’m going to clarify to the best of my ability how to use borax, what it is, should you use it, and is it really bad for your health?

What is Borax?

Borax is a natural chemical that can commonly be found in tooth paste, hand soap, and used as a detergent booster. The scientific name is Sodium Borate. It is the salt form of boric acid. It is one of the most important boron compounds.

It’s completely harmless to humans and can be used for various different reasons such as:

  • Laundry Booster
  • Household Cleaner
  • Water Softening Agent
  • Food additive (Used as a preservative)
  • Insect Killer

>>Check out our favorite flea killer here<<

Does Borax Kill Fleas?

Borax is a very effective method of killing fleas. It works very similarly to diatomaceous earth. Fleas breath it in and they become severely dehydrated as the borax absorbs all moisture in their bodies.

Not only will it dehydrate them but the crystals are small enough to where they are razor sharp to fleas and when inhaled it will definitely kill them.

Diatomaceous Earth works in the exact same way. Borax is probably a little easier to find though. Diatomaceous earth is just the fossilized remains of small aquatic creatures called diatoms. Its completely natural as well. If you want more information on Diatomaceous earth please read my article here

It’s readily available at most convenience stores. If you can’t find it you can buy it here.

>>Click here to buy Borax now<<

Is Borax Dangerous to Humans?

Borax is a natural flea kill and scientist have yet to prove its dangerous. Though on the boxes it says avoid contact with your eyes and avoid consumption. You would think both of these are common sense though.

I have read that if borax is inhaled it can cause respiratory irritation. This makes sense because the borax powder is actually really sharp. Be careful when using it just in case. Try wearing a protective mask to keep from inhaling.

My answer though is No, Borax is not dangerous to humans when being used as a flea killer. Its highly effective for killing fleas and isn’t dangerous so I recommend using it if you see it in the store or have some lying around the house. Make sure though you wear a protective mask and avoid contact with your eyes. Borax is perfectly safe as long as you are cautious.

How to use Borax

Since borax is a powder its really easy to use. Just spread the borax around the house on your carpet, and wood tile floors. Once it covers all the infected areas leave it for a few hour.

Usually I leave it between 3 and 6 hours. If you have a really deep carpet try using a broom and brushing over the carpet to help the borax sink in. This can kill any fleas that a buried deep in your carpeting.

Once its sat for long enough you can just vacuum it up. Continue doing this daily until you no longer find fleas in your home.

Buying flea traps can be expensive and sometimes entirely unnecessary. You can easily make homemade flea traps using items around you home that are just as effective as store bought flea traps.

In this article I’m going to teach you how to make various flea traps that can be placed around your home. These traps will do an amazing job of killing fleas

TV Trap

Metz_Axio_TVThis is my personal favorite flea trap. It works like magic and is really easy to do!

First thing you need to do is fill a 13×9 pan half full of water and soap to catch the fleas. You can place this in front of the TV .Then turn on the TV with the sound off, I suggest turning the TV to either Keeping up with the Kardashians, or The Jerry Springer Show. These shows will rot the fleas minds causing them to die faster.

While the fleas are getting caught in the trap you can go out on the town or just go to sleep and come back and take a look in the morning. Your mind will be blown by the amount of captured fleas.

Lamp Trap

vector___lamp_by_misteraibo-d4p4cyaThe lamp trap uses a lamp with a bright bulb and a bowl of soapy water to catch the fleas. To start, get a bowl and fill it with water then add a dash of soap and mix it around until the soap is mixed in. Try to prevent making bubbles when stirring the soap in. The soap will keep the fleas in the bowl, preventing them from escaping.

Once you have the bowl of soap and water take a lamp and place it on the ground above the bowl of soapy water. Make sure to angle the lamp so that the light shines onto the bowl.

If you don’t have a lamp you can also place the bowl against a wall underneath a night light. The light will draw the fleas to the bowl where they will be caught and die.

Cup Trap

cup-42427_640This really wont cost you any money at all. Just take a cup of water or a few depending on the severity of your infestation and fill them with water. Then place some dish soap or any kind of soap you have lying around. Mix the soap into the cup, once again try not to make bubbles. Place the cup into a window where the light is and let it sit.

You can use multiple different cups and place them throughout the house. I really suggest doing this if you have a really large flea infestation and wish to get rid of fleas as fast as possible.

Candle Trap

14136-illustration-of-a-candle-with-a-burning-flame-pvThe easiest of all the traps. Step one is you need to buy a thick candle. The second part is to light it where you wont have to leave it unattended. If you didn’t understand that I don’t know how to make it anymore simple. All you do is light a candle and stick it somewhere.

This is a very simple homemade flea trap and doesn’t take any effort. I don’t recommend using it though because its not a very effective trap.

Bowl Candle Trap

bowl-310064_640This is a very simple trap that uses a bowl of soapy water and a candle. Just fill a bowl with water and a little bit of soap. Place a small candle such as a tea candle in the center of the bowl. The fleas will jump towards the candle and get caught in the water like in the other Traps.

I’ve used this candle trap before and its worked really well for me so far. As long as you have light and a way to kill the fleas you can passively kill a large number of fleas.

Bath Trap

This isn’t the best homemade flea trap in the world but it does cover have a large area for the fleas to jump into.

For this trap just fill your bathtub up with soapy water, or water with vinegar mixed into it and place a candle in the center of the water. This trap sometimes works really well depending on where your bathtub is and if you have a low bath tub or a high one.

Other information

3404894430_197b580c0a_oIf you don’t to make your own flea trap you can always buy one from here. Store bought flea traps may work better depending on the size of your infestation.

This is a trap but my girlfriend does this to our dogs when they have fleas. Fleas have hard shells making them sometimes hard to kill. What you can do if you see a flea is pick it up and place it in a water bottle. If you leave the flea in the bottle and shake the bottle it will kill the fleas easily.

You can also roll the fleas between your fingers to kill them. This will break their legs preventing them from jumping to a host.

Flea traps are a great way to take out fleas and treat and infestation. You can build traps at home with common household items or you can buy traps depending on the time you have and the quality you want. Electric flea traps are the most common traps. When I use flea traps I prefer to use electric flea traps.

 What are electric flea traps?

Electric flea traps are made from a sticky substance that’s placed under a warm light. The traps are plugged into a wall and set out to attract fleas. The Warmth of the light pulls the fleas towards the light where they will be caught in the sticky substance place underneath the light.

When making your own electric flea trap the sticky substance underneath the light is a mixture of water and soap. If you just put water under the light the fleas will be able to escape that is why you must put soap into it. Store bought flea traps are much easier to maintain.

When using a store bought flea trap its much easier to maintain. When you purchase a flea trap it comes with a replaceable tar like substance on a tray. When the tray is becoming to full just take out the tray then replace it with a new tray.

How to use an Electric flea trap

Not only are electric flea traps very effective but they’re also easy to use. The first thing you’ll need to do is find an electric outlet in an area around where your pet spends a lot of time whether its on the couch, your bedroom, or near their pet bed. Leave it there until the container becomes full. Once its full of fleas change out the sticky tray and replace it with a new once so you can continue trapping fleas.

Find out how to make homemade flea traps here!

What flea trap should I buy?

The Victor M230 Ultimate Flea Trap is my personal favorite purchasable flea trap. This flea trap contains absolutely no poisons so it isn’t harmful to pets or children. Its great to have because it can become a permanent necessity around the house that is reusable until its broken. Once its placed you don’t need to worry about it at all except to replace the tray when it fills up. The fleas will gather around it like its a magical portal to a amazing world of fleas!

Benefits

  • Non-poisonous, odorless flea trap safe to use around children and pets
  • Patented design uses color, heat, light, and sweet odor to lure fleas; attracts fleas from 30 feet away in every direction

Fleas are greedy and will bite just about anything that wonders by. This includes humans. You’ve heard of dogs and cats having fleas but what do fleas do to humans? Well they have the same affect on us as they do on dogs and cats. The only difference is that pets have fur so its easier to hide on them than it is for them to hide on humans.

Flea bites can cause severe itching, rashes, and sometimes infections. Fleas on humans can be frustrating but can easily be dealt with.  You may have just a few bites on you from a friends house or from laying down in the grass outside. This is easy to fix and can be tolerable.

The thing you want to try and avoid is an infestation. I’ve been in houses where I couldn’t go anywhere without a flea being somewhere on my body. It drove me crazy!

I’m going to teach out what steps to take to take care of flea bites on humans and how to treat a flea infestation.

How do fleas get into your home

3404894430_197b580c0a_o

If you can find out how fleas are getting into your home you can find out how to keep them from biting you. Usually fleas are carried into your home by a pet or by you. If you let your dog out for a bathroom break there will likely be fleas outside waiting.

When your pet comes back inside they fleas will hide in their fur and its all downhill from there. They will bite your pet giving them the blood meal they need to lay eggs.

If you don’t have a pet then the same thing probably happened with you. They could have latched onto you and enjoyed the ride into your home.

How to reduce itching

You can reduce itching the same way you would with any other bug bite. You can use any of the following to reduce itching.

  • Apply honey to the bite
  • Over the counter Antihistamines such as Benadryl
  •  Ointments containing Lidocaine or Benzocaine
  • Aloe Vera

Make sure that you avoid itching as much as you can. If you itch the bite it can lead to infections. If your bite starts to swell or  become really red it may be infected. Go see a doctor as soon as possible to treat the infection before it becomes dangerous.

How to get rid of fleas in your home

If you find fleas or flea bites on your body then its likely that you also have fleas in your home. If you don’t want to be bit by fleas anymore you’re going to have to get rid of the fleas in your home. The longer you wait to do this the larger and more problematic the fleas will become.

Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous Earth is a harmless and great way to take care of large flea infestations. Diatomaceous Earth is the fossilized remains of aquatic creatures called diatoms.

All you have to do is spread the diatomaceous earth around you home and let it sit. While the diatomaceous earth is sitting the fleas will breathe it in. It will then absorb the moisture in their bodies causing them to die.

You can leave the diatomaceous earth on the ground for a few hours or a few days depending on how bad your infestation is and how often you will be in your home.

Keep spreading the Diatomaceous earth and vacuuming it up until your flea infestation is no more.

Flea Spray

Not one of my favorite methods of flea treatment. Some chemicals used in fleas sprays can  be toxic and harmful. There are plenty of all natural flea sprays out there like Vets Best Flea Spray.

You can spray it on your pets, carpeting, clothes and anything else you may believe have fleas on them. As long as you use something all natural it wont cause any sort of harm to you, your family or your pets.

>>Buy Flea Spray Here<<

Flea Foggers

Another solution for a large flea infestation. Flea foggers are used when your infestation is getting out of control. You will have to use the flea foggers and leave them in your home for long periods of time. This means your going to have to take you and your pets out until the flea foggers are done doing their jobs.

If you want to learn more about flea foggers and how to use them check out my article here.

Flea Steamer

My favorite method of flea treatment. This is the more expensive solution to flea treatment but its incredibly effective. Fleas and their eggs and larva can’t live in the high temperatures that flea steamers produce.

The steamers are able to penetrate deep into your carpeting to kill any hiding fleas. Steamers are pricey but they are a great long term investment. All you need to do is repeatedly steam your carpet until the infestation is completely  gone. You’ll also get cleaner carpets in the process.

Another way to make it more sure the fleas are gone is by mixing diatomaceous earth and the steamer. You can sprinkle the diatomaceous earth then vacuum and steam it out of their carpet.

When fleas get hungry enough and can’t find a proper host such as a cat or dog they tend to look for anything close by they can feed on.  This means they’re willing to feed on humans.

This tends to be a problem because when fleas finish eating they want to lay eggs. While you’re laying around fleas can work their way up to your head and lay eggs in your hair. I get itchy just thinking about it!

Treating Fleas in Human Hair

Lets go ahead and get to the point so we can get rid of those fleas as quickly as possible. There are plenty of easy ways to treat fleas in human hair:

Shampoo – There are various shampoos designed for lice, and mites that work just as well for fleas and flea eggs. Using one of these shampoos such as Fairy Tales Rosemary Repel Lice Prevention will get the job done.

Apple Cider Vinegar – You can’t ever go wrong with apple cider vinegar when it comes to fleas. It’s an amazing preventative and treatment for both pets and humans. The acidic nature of apple cider vinegar makes it easy to destroy flea eggs and kill adult fleas.

Just mix the apple cider with some warm water and scrub it through your hair. If you want to make absolutely sure that the fleas have been taken care of put a shower cap on your head to keep the vinegar on your scalp for at least 15 minutes.

Tea Tree Oil Shampoos – Tea tree oil is good for killing and preventing fleas as well. If you can find a tea tree oil based shampoo like Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shampoo you can use that to get take care of the fleas in your hair.

Treating Fleas in your Home

You now know how to get rid of fleas in your hair but that’s not the source of the problem. If there are fleas in your hair then more than likely there are fleas in your home.

This is where the real problem is because if fleas are still hiding in and around your house you’ll just end up with fleas in your hair again. Below I’m going to list a few quick ways to get rid of fleas in your home so you can take out fleas from the source!

Flea Sprays – Flea sprays are a quick and effective ways to kill fleas. If you use a flea spray with Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs) in it like Wondercide Natural Flea & Tick Control it will work even quicker by taking any fleas out during any part of the flea life cycle.

Diatomaceous Earth – This way is a bit messier but its all natural and happens to be one of my favorite flea treatments.

Diatomaceous earth is a fine white powder made from the fossilized remains of microscopic creatures known as diatoms. When fleas breathe in the diatomaceous earth it absorbs the oils in their bodies causing them to die.

All you have to do is spread it throughout your house and let it sit for a day then vacuum it up. You can read more about using diatomaceous earth in my article here.

>> Buy Diatomaceous Earth Here<<

Flea Foggers – Not my preferred method of flea treatment but it’s quick and can be very effective. You can leave them in your home while you take off for the day. When you get back to the house your flea problem should be taken care of.

You can read more about flea foggers here or you can go ahead and buy flea foggers here to take care of your problem fast.

Flea Steamers – This method is the most pricey but also the most effective. If you steam your carpet, and couch it will take out any flea deeply embedded in your home. You can also use the steamer to clean your home. If you get fleas in the future you can just use the steamer again! Click here to read more about flea steamers.

Fleas in your carpet is a serious issue when it comes to flea infestations. Fleas don’t normally hide around wood or tile floors. They prefer wet, moist, dark, and secure areas such as carpeting, clothes or pet fur. Its important to treat your infestation as soon as you can. This article will cover the basics to treating fleas in your carpet.

Steam Cleaning

I’ve found this to be the most effective and chemical free way to treat fleas in your carpet. Fleas bury deep down into carpeting and usually eggs are hiding deep in your carpet. Fleas Steamers can penetrate the deep parts of your carpeting not only killing fleas but providing a clean, new looking carpet.

Flea steamers project steam at high enough temperatures to kill fleas in all parts of the flea life cycle. Not all flea killing methods can kill fleas in every part of the flea life cycle. Steaming does though which it was the first solution I listed because it’s the best. If you don’t have a fleas steamer I suggest buying one here. This is an amazing flea steamer that will get the job done.

>>Read more about killing fleas with steam here<<

Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous Earth is another great way to remove fleas from carpet. This is a cheap method that’s worked for me in the past. Just remove your smaller furniture from your living room and spread the diatomaceous earth evenly throughout your carpet. Make sure your entire carpeting is covered so you can get every single spot that fleas may hide.

Once the entire carpet is covered leave the diatomaceous earth in your carpet for up to 12 hours. When the twelve hour period is up just vacuum it up until the diatomaceous earth is gone. Repeat this process once a week until the flea infestation is gone. If you want to learn more about diatomaceous earth and what it it check out my diatomaceous earth article here.

>>Buy Diatomaceous Earth Here<<

Flea Sprays

This is very effective but can be dangerous if you buy the wrong type of spray. Various flea sprays have been known to have chemicals in them that are poisonous. When buying a flea spray make sure you’re buying a spray that is all natural so it doesn’t harm you, your family, or your pet. I suggest buying Vet’s Best Natural Flea Spray.

The easiest way to use flea spray is really simple. You just spray the fleas spray throughout the infested carpeting and let it sit. The spray will do that work for you killing all the fleas in the area its sprayed.

>>Buy Natural Flea Spray Here<<

Salt

This is a natural and easy way to kill fleas in your carpet. It’s simple and the most convenient the only problem is if you have a lot of carpeting  it will take a lot of spray.

Salt works the same way as diatomaceous earth, you spread it throughout the house and let it sit. The finer the salt the better it will work. If you want you can also use baking soda mixed with salt to make a larger mixture.

Clean your pets bedding

If you have pets make sure that you clean there bedding as well as cleaning the carpet. The infestation generally starts with pets. When taking your pets out to use the restroom they will likely bring fleas into the house with them. To keep this from happening you can use  or flea shampoo.

To clean pet bedding you can put it in the washer with a small amount of dish detergent or laundry detergent with a small fragrance, then add a cup of baking soda. I suggest using cold water to wash it. This will kill all of the fleas in your pets bedding.

We’ve all probably heard of Diatomaceous Earth before, but you may not know exactly what it is, what it can be used for, and how to use it. In this article I’m going to answer all of your Diatomaceous earth questions!

What is Diatomaceous Earth?

Diatomaceous Earth is a fine white powder made from the fossilized remains of very small aquatic organisms known as Diatoms. The skeletons of Diatoms are made from a natural compound called silica. Over a long period of time these silica skeletons accumulate in the bottom of rivers, creeks, lakes, and various oceans.

Silica is a fairly common resource that makes up more that 25% of the earths crust. It doesn’t occur naturally in a raw form though. It appears in different forms like quartz, emerald, and sand.

Silicon is a resource found in silica. Silicon reacts with water and oxygen to create Silicon Dioxide. Silicon Dioxide is now used as a pesticide known as Diatomaceous Earth. This is where we get into what it can be used for.

What can Diatomaceous Earth be used for?

Diatomaceous Earth is one of the most powerful and easy to use pesticides out there. It can be used anywhere and kills a large variety of pest such as fleas, ticks, bed bugs, ants, roaches, and spiders.

There are plenty of other uses for Diatomaceous Earth such as toothpaste, Facial scrub, and deodorant. I personally haven’t used diatomaceous earth for anything but killing fleas but if you want to try something new go for it! Just do some research first!

How to use Diatomaceous Earth for Fleas

1. The first thing you’re going to want to get is food grade Diatomaceous Earth. You can buy it just about anywhere or you can buy it on Amazon here.

2. The second thing you’re going to want to do is vacuum your carpet. This isn’t absolutely necessary but it will remove as many fleas as possible before covering your floor in the DE.

3. After you’re done vacuuming go ahead and spread the Diatomaceous Earth in a light layer across your carpeting or tile.

4. Leave the Diatomaceous Earth in your carpet for at least a day to ensure the fleas die. If you want to make absolutely sure that they are dead you can leave the Diatomaceous Earth in your carpeting for 3 days.

5. Once its been sitting for between 1 and 3 days go ahead and vacuum it up.

6. I don’t suggest doing this only once you should definitely reapply the diatomaceous earth over the next month or two to make sure the fleas are all taken care of. If you have pets I highly recommend using a flea applicator on their fur to get rid of any fleas on them.

Dogs are mans best friend and a part of our families. It’s terrible to see our dogs itching from flea bites. There are various different ways to treat fleas on cats and dogs. This article will cover some of the basic ways to go about treating the fleas causing your dog so much pain.

Flea Drops or Topicals

This is my preferred method of flea treatment. Flea drops not only treat fleas but can prevent them for long periods of time. Flea drops work by taking a flea drop applicator breaking the tip off an putting the application on the back of your dogs fur typically the upper back area where your dog can’t reach around to lick it off.

Flea killers often contain toxic chemicals that can harm you, your family, and your pets. This tends to deter people from using commercial flea killers. Flea killers can cost a large some of money as well and many people (myself included) don’t want to spend that kind of money. This leads to the question are there any other ways I can kill fleas without the expensive toxic chemicals.

As a matter of fact there is another way! The flea killer is probably sitting in your kitchen right now waiting to be used. Vinegar is a great way to kill fleas in your home. Though it isn’t the best smelling flea killer its cheap, non-toxic, and works like magic.

Whats the best kind of vinegar to use?

There are so many different kinds of vinegars that can be found in stores. That makes us wonder which on should we use to kill fleas. All kinds of vinegars have been proven to kill fleas so which ever kind of vinegar you have laying around will work. Personally I prefer Apple cider vinegar when using vinegar around the house.

How to use vinegar to kill and prevent fleas

There are plenty of different ways to kill fleas with vinegar. Below I’m going to list some of the various different ways to help you find the method you’ll enjoy the most.

Vinegar Spray

14820394192_4313017e66_z

This is the most basic way to use vinegar to kill fleas. All you need is a empty spray bottle, water, and apple cider vinegar. If you have all three just take the spray bottle and fill it halfway up with the vinegar. Once its filled halfway, fill it the rest of the way with the water.

You can spray the vinegar spray on counters, carpets, bed sheets, and your pets fur. If you spray it on your pet it will kill the fleas hiding in their fur and prevent more fleas from wanting to infest your pets fur. Your pet may have fun licking the vinegar out of their fur though so make sure to apply the vinegar spray often!

Mix vinegar with your pet’s water

I’ve talked with many pet owners that have had success mixing vinegar with their pets drinking water. The vinegar is theorized to make your pets blood too acidic for fleas to enjoy. This results in fleas no longer wanting to feast on your pet. It doesn’t require a lot of vinegar, just enough to keep your pet from noticing yet still make the fleas not want to feed.

Vinegar Soaking

The final vinegar method I’m going to cover is vinegar soaking. You can use this method to kill fleas in clothes, pet bedding, and bed sheets. All you need to do is mix water and vinegar, then drop the clothing or bedding in the mixture and let it sit for a few hour to make sure all fleas have died.

Final Thoughts

I hope you found this article to be informative and helpful. Vinegar is a great way to kill fleas but can really make your home smell foul. There are other completely natural was to kill fleas such as diatomaceous earth or salt. If you have any comments or concerns please feel free to contact us using our contact page!
