Flea bites are small, irritating, and can drive you crazy! It’s bad enough when you have flea bites on you and your pet, but when there are bites on your baby things seem to get a little bit more personal. If left untreated these bites can cause children and babies unnecessary discomfort and pain. Below I’m going to teach you how you can keep these bites from itching, how to recognize infections, identify flea bites, and prevent further flea infestations.

What do flea bites look like?

IMG_3328

Flea bites are small, red, swollen bites that cause extreme skin irritation. If you look closely at the flea bite you will see a small red dot at its center. This is where a flea bit your skin to draw blood. Fleas need a host to provide blood meals without blood meals the fleas will die.

These bites typically happen around our ankles. This is an easy place for fleas to get to and they are able to burrow into our socks where it’s warm and moist. If most of your bites are on your ankles it very well may be flea bites. On your babies the bites will most likely occur on legs or arms if those areas aren’t clothed.

If your bites don’t look at all like this then you may be experiencing a different kind of infestation such as bed bugs. If you want to read more on bed bug bites check out my article on the difference between flea bites and bed bug bites here.

Preventing Infestations

Prevention is the best method to keep fleas off you and your family. If you can keep fleas from getting in your house then you wont have to treat bites or an infestation.

  • Flea Drops – This is the best flea prevention product out there. It can be pricy but you won’t be disappointed. Flea drops are applied to your pets back. When fleas come in contact with the area or bite your pet it will kill them. The applications can last anywhere from 5 weeks to 2 months depending on the brand. I prefer Frontline Plus if you would like to read more about flea drops you can find out more here.
  • Flea Traps – Traps are great passive flea killers. Fleas are attracted to warmth. Flea traps have a small light that hangs above a sticky substance designed to trap fleas. When the fleas head for the light they quickly become trapped in the sticky substance. You can place these traps all over your house or just in the areas where you pet spends a lot of time. Check out my guide to flea traps article. It will teach you how to properly use flea traps and how to make your own flea trap!
  • Flea steamers – You can prevent a flea infestation with a steamer. Fleas can’t survive in the temperature, and moisture produced by a flea steamer. If you have carpeting in your house I suggest buying a steamer that meets all the requirements to kill fleas. You can buy one of those steamers here or you can read more about flea steamers here.
  • Flea Shampoo – This is the final item on my list. Flea shampoo is exactly what it says it is. Its a shampoo that is designed to kill fleas. Its not something you have to use daily because the effects last for long periods of time. Depending on the brand you get is how long it will last. You can buy flea shampoos with natural ingredients to prevent damage to your pets skin. When using flea shampoo I typically use Adams Plus Flea and Tick Control Shampoo with Precor.

How to stop itching on your baby

  • You can use soothing creams such as calamine lotion or Aloe Vera to help relieve some of the pain from itching. Both work just as well as the other.
  • The same anti-itch cream used on mosquito or ant bites works on flea bites as well.
  • You can also use a cotton ball soaked in baking soda to treat itching as well. This helps reduce pain and inflammation. It’s not one of the most effective methods but if you’re short on money this is a quick itch fix.
  • Bug repellant can keep more fleas from jumping on your baby and adding more bites. Make sure to read the directions on the bottle to make sure that the repellant is safe to use on infants.
  • You can use ice to numb the pain if it becomes too severe but most of the time babies don’t enjoy something ice cold on their skin so I suggest using this method as a last resort.
  • You can apply essential oils such as tea tree oil or baby lotion to the bites to prevent infection.

Flea Bite Infections

Flea-Bites-Pictures-4

Flea bite infections can be dangerous if not tended to. If you believe you have a flea bite infection you should seek medical attention quickly. Some of the flea bite symptoms include:

  • Redness
  • Swollen glands
  • Pain in bite area
  • Possible skin leakage
  • Bites becomes larger due to swelling

Flea shampoo is a great way to remove fleas from your pets fur. Flea shampoos have chemicals in the designed to kill fleas. Some flea shampoos also contains chemicals that allow long term flea prevention. This can keep fleas off your pet for 4 weeks! Below I’m going to show you my favorite fleas shampoos for both cats and dogs. If you want to learn more about flea shampoo you can read my article here.

Best Flea Shampoo For Your Pet

1. Adams Plus Flea & Tick Shampoo with Precor for Dogs and Cats

Adams Plus is the best flea shampoo I’ve used. It not only kills adult fleas but also kills flea eggs. Not a lot of products kill adult fleas and fleas eggs. Adams Plus kills both and does a great job of it too. It’s gentle on yours and your pets skin, smells great, and is relatively cheap only costing a mere 12 dollars!  Thats an cheap investment for a product with such great quality.

If you have a cat as well as a dog this is a great option for you. Adams plus works on cats and dogs alike so you can take out two birds with one stone.

My only complaint is a small one. It does tend to dry out your pets fur so I suggest using a conditioner. This conditioner can be applied while bathing your pet or sprayed on afterwards.

Buy on Amazon now!

2. Advantage Flea Treatment Shampoo for Dogs

Advantage always has great flea treatment products. You can use their flea shampoo or flea drops and both work like magic killing fleas either on contact or within a few hours. Your pet will be flea free in no time!

I have noticed that it doesn’t keep fleas off my dog for as long as it claims too. Advantage says it will keep fleas off your pet for up to 100 days. Usually I find fleas on my dog again after the first month so I have to reapply it about once a month.

Seeing as some flea shampoos can only keep fleas off your pet for a week or two this isn’t a problem for me.

 3. Vet’s Best Anti Flea Easy Spray Shampoo

If your pet doesn’t like baths and tends to make things very difficult, this is a great option for you. Vets Best created this flea shampoo so you can spray it on your dog or cat instead of having to scrub. It works really well, its cheap, and easy to use

Just like Adams flea shampoo it can be used on cats and dogs. When sprayed it doesn’t just target adult fleas but will also kill any flea eggs that are caught in your pets fur.

For pets with sensitive skin this product will work best because of its mix of clove, and peppermint oil to soothe skin irritation.

If you’re on this site then you’ve probably had fleas in your house or have them now. A great way to prevent fleas is by figuring out how they get into your house to cause this infestation. There are a few different reason how they can sneak into your house without you knowing until its too late.

The main way fleas  get into your house is pet’s. Yes, as cute as your pets are whether they’re a cat or dog, they can be a walking flea machine. Fleas love to burrow into your pet’s fur for warmth and a nice blood meal. After they’ve fed off your pet they’ll lay eggs in their fur that will eventually fall off  due to the absence of a sticky substance to hold the eggs in place. These eggs will fall into your carpet and the flea life cycle will begin leading to a large infestation.

Though this is incredibly rare, try to watch for stray animals. Strays that have been outside for long periods of time are bound to have fleas. I’m not talking about just cats and dogs but pest like birds, mice or rats can have fleas tracking them into your house if your door or window is left open.

It’s vital that you keep your pet clean and well groomed. Use a flea comb frequently and try to bathe your pet as often as you can. I highly recommend using a flea shampoo but if you cant get a flea shampoo at the moment a simple bath will suffice.

Vacuuming your house is really important too. I wouldn’t say vacuum it everyday unless your positive you have an infestation other wise just use your best judgment and at least vacuum once a week. Vacuuming will remove all the eggs and flea larva thats buried in your carpet.

Another possible way fleas can get in your house is by a previous owner of the house. Fleas can stay in a cocooned state for months and wont come out until the feel the vibrations of someone walking near them. They will then hatch from their cocoons looking for a blood meal. The previous owner may have had pet’s and thats how the fleas got into the house. When renting or buying try to check and see if the previous owner had pet’s.

2562591188_8f52fcc1c1_o

The final way fleas can get into your home is your children if you have any. Kids love to play outside, we all know this from experience. When they are outside they’ll play in the woods, grass, or dirt. There will be fleas there so when your kids come in for a grilled cheese for lunch all the fleas they pick up will come with them and right into your home.

There are so many different parasites in the world that love to prey on animals and humans alike. It’s easy to get some of these parasites mixed up. Some of the most common household parasites are bed bugs, fleas, and ticks. Fleas and ticks can quickl on your pets. The two have the same purpose. They eat to live and live to breed. Ticks and fleas both feed on the blood of other animals and humans.

Though the two have a very similar purpose, there is a significant difference between them. Below I’m going to explain the difference between the two and how you can get rid of each of them.

Ticks

Type of Parasite: Arachnid

Size: Can be as small as a poppy seed when first feeding

Lifespan: A few weeks to 3 years

Time on Host: Spends most of life off host waiting for one to walk by

Climate: Can survive near freezing temperatures

Possible Diseases: Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

TickImage

Ticks are not actually insects but are considered to be an arachnid as they have eight legs, like a spider. It’s bigger than a flea measuring ¼ to 1/8 inches. Unlike fleas, they don’t mind moving between animals as they can’t spend too much time on the same host. In fact, they depend on various hosts of different species for nutrition.

Ticks can be found on snakes, lizards and humans and have a lifespan anywhere from three weeks to three years. They climb on the ends of leaves, shrubs and plants and wait for a host to pass by wherein they attach themselves onto the host.

They then travel over the body to find an appropriate place to feed like the body’s shaded areas like ears, hair and inside of arms. They feed by inserting their pincers into the host and excreting an anticoagulant which prevents blood clogging. They cannot jump or fly and only crawl to reach anywhere they want.

Unlike fleas, they fall off the host to lay thousands of eggs at one time after which they die. They are happiest in cold temperatures and thus are happy in winter climates. They are dangerous as they don’t spend their lives attached to one host and thus spread germs and diseases from one host to another. The spread around various diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Tick removal

Removing a tick involves removing all its body parts and preventing it from releasing saliva or regurgitating its stomach contents onto your bite wound. It’s best to use a tick removal tool which helps grip the tick’s head without squashing its body.

You can also use pointed tweezers to grasp the tick close to its skin without squeezing its body and then pull the tick out without twisting. Even a cotton thread or dental floss can be used if there’s no tools around. Tie the thread in a single loop around the tick’s mouthparts near its skin, and pull upwards and outwards without twisting.

Start by cleansing the tweezers or tool with antiseptic. Then cleanse the bite site and tool with an antiseptic after tick removal. Thoroughly wash your hands after removing the tick.

Make sure you don’t squeeze the tick’s body as it gets separated from the body to leave the head embedded in your skin. Also do not use your fingernails to remove a tick as infections can enter any skin breaks, like near the fingernail.

Never crush the tick’s body as the tick may vomit all the infected contents in its stomach onto the bite wound. It is also no use trying to burn the tick or applying things like nail polish or petroleum jelly as they only cause discomfort to the tick. This leads to regurgitation or saliva release.

The tick can be disposed by first crushing it and then putting it down the toilet or by folding it onto a strip of sticky tape and placing in the waste. However be careful as engorged ticks may contain infected blood which can splatter when crushed.

Check out the video below to watch the proper tick removal method!

Fleas

3404894430_197b580c0a_o

Fleas are wingless insects which live and feed on human, cat, dog and other animals’ blood. They are flat and dark-colored with tube-like mouth parts to feed on the host’s blood. Measuring 1/6 to 1/8 inches in length, these fleas are difficult to spot. They however can leap to great heights and lengths as their legs are well adapted for jumping.

They have a lifespan of about 100 days so once they find a body, they remain there till they die. They then lay about 20 to 40 eggs a day for several weeks and these eggs end up everywhere as your dog sheds hair. So all it takes is one flea to start an epidemic in a house. And they can carry bartonellosis and tapeworm when they land on their host.

Fleas prefer heat to cold and is why they prefer spending time indoors. Fleas leave a series of bites resulting in a slightly raised and swollen itching spot with a central puncture point similar to a mosquito bite.

Size: 1.5 to 3.2 millimeters

Lifespan: 2-3 months

Time on Host: Fleas will stay on their host until they get a blood meal.

Climate: 46.4 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit

Possible Diseases: cat-scratch fever, typhus, bubonic plague, bartonellosis, tapeworm

Flea Removal

There are so many different ways to remove fleas from your home and to keep them off your pets. Below I’m going to list a few of my favorite methods. If you would like to know more about treating flea infestations your can read more here or check out some of the links below!

Flea DropsFleas drops are the best way to keep fleas off your cats and dogs. Flea drops use an application that lasts anywhere from 3 weeks to 7 weeks depending on the brand you buy. The flea drops begin working within 24 hours of the first application. If any fleas come in contact with the area the application was placed they will die. The fleas will also die if they bite into your pets fur. You can buy flea drops here.

Steam Cleaning- The temperature of steamers and the amount of water put out combined is enough to easily kill fleas. You need to make sure that the temperature of the steamer is hot enough to kill the fleas though. Read my article on steam cleaning fleas here!

Flea Traps – You can place these anywhere in your home and they will passively kill fleas while you sleep. The traps use a warm light and a sticky substance designed to trap any fleas that land in it. Fleas are attracted to warmth so when you turn the light on they instinctively move towards it causing them to get stuck. If you don’t want to buy a flea trap you can make your own trap. If you want to know how to make your own trap you can find out how to here.

Diatomaceous EarthThis is a fine white powder made from the fossils of microscopic aquatic organisms called diatoms. When inhaled by fleas it absorbs oils causing there bodies to dry out killing them. I highly recommend using Diatomaceous earth. When it has sat in your carpet for a long period of time you can simply vacuum it up! You can buy Diatomaceous Earth here!

Flea Shampoo – This is exactly what it sounds like. Flea shampoo is a shampoo designed to kill any fleas hiding in your pets fur. Its easy to use and last for a few weeks. You can buy flea shampoo here or check out my flea shampoo article here.

Most of the time I wouldn’t recommend using a flea fogger or flea bomb in your home. This is because with a flea fogger you’re releasing hazardous chemicals into the air that could linger in your home after use. Sometimes you may need a fogger though. Flea Infestations can grow so large that you need a flea killer that will kill a large amount of fleas really quickly. This is when I suggest flea foggers

Below I’m going to list 3 of my preferred flea foggers that I use when fleas get out of hand. If you have any questions you can ask me using my contact page.

Best Flea Fogger- Raid Flea Fogger

Raid Flea Foggers are a more environmentally friendly flea fogger because they don’t use CFCs which are harmful to the atmosphere. It has really quick killing power so you can set the fogger off while you run to the store.

Not only does it kill fleas while its going off but it controls fleas for up to 4 months provided you are keeping fleas off your pets. If you want a quality, safe, long term flea fogger then the Raid Flea Fogger is what you need.

Buy on Amazon now!

Hot Shot Flea Bombs

This Flea killer is recommended by a large number of consumers which is proof that its effective and gets the job done. It doesn’t just kill fleas but also other pets such as roaches, and bed bugs.

The Hot Shot Flea Bomb covers a large area making it easier to take out more fleas with less bombs. This is the runner-up for my favorite flea foggers. Its cheap, effective, safe and kills spiders and other insects along with fleas.

I do suggest putting a towel or newspaper  below the fogger though in case it leaks onto the floor.

Buy on Amazon now!

Zodiac Flea Bomb

This is a flea bomb that take fleas out from the root. The Zodiac Flea Bomb has Insect Growth Regulator in it which not only kills adult fleas, but also kills flea eggs and larva too.

The packaging says that it can prevent flea infestations for up to 7 months. I haven’t used Zodiac enough to be able to tell if this actually works but in my opinion thats a little far fetched.

The zodiac flea bomb works great to get ride of fleas quickly and effectively. I do recommend buying multiple bombs though and placing one in each room of your home that has a window. This makes the bomb all the more effective.

Steps to take when using foggers

1. Open cabinets and doors to rooms to make sure the foggers get into every place fleas could hide.

2. Cover dishes, food, and aquariums if you have any. You can cover clothes too but thats not absolutely dire.

3. Make sure everyone is out of the house while the foggers go off. Do not return until time specified on fogger.

4. Read the fogger instructions because different foggers go off for different times.

5. When you return open up all windows in your home to make sure everything vents out.

6. Wipe down counters and tables around the house. If you have small children wipe down anything they can put in their mouth such as toys, or utensils.

For more information read up the foggers instructions.

When looking for ways to get rid of fleas borax is something you’ve probably heard of. There’s a lot of talk about it being really bad to use and some talk of it being safe to use. What should we believe?

I’m going to clarify to the best of my ability how to use borax, what it is, should you use it, and is it really bad for your health?

What is Borax?

Borax is a natural chemical that can commonly be found in tooth paste, hand soap, and used as a detergent booster. The scientific name is Sodium Borate. It is the salt form of boric acid. It is one of the most important boron compounds.

It’s completely harmless to humans and can be used for various different reasons such as:

  • Laundry Booster
  • Household Cleaner
  • Water Softening Agent
  • Food additive (Used as a preservative)
  • Insect Killer

>>Check out our favorite flea killer here<<

Does Borax Kill Fleas?

Borax is a very effective method of killing fleas. It works very similarly to diatomaceous earth. Fleas breath it in and they become severely dehydrated as the borax absorbs all moisture in their bodies.

Not only will it dehydrate them but the crystals are small enough to where they are razor sharp to fleas and when inhaled it will definitely kill them.

Diatomaceous Earth works in the exact same way. Borax is probably a little easier to find though. Diatomaceous earth is just the fossilized remains of small aquatic creatures called diatoms. Its completely natural as well. If you want more information on Diatomaceous earth please read my article here

It’s readily available at most convenience stores. If you can’t find it you can buy it here.

>>Click here to buy Borax now<<

Is Borax Dangerous to Humans?

Borax is a natural flea kill and scientist have yet to prove its dangerous. Though on the boxes it says avoid contact with your eyes and avoid consumption. You would think both of these are common sense though.

I have read that if borax is inhaled it can cause respiratory irritation. This makes sense because the borax powder is actually really sharp. Be careful when using it just in case. Try wearing a protective mask to keep from inhaling.

My answer though is No, Borax is not dangerous to humans when being used as a flea killer. Its highly effective for killing fleas and isn’t dangerous so I recommend using it if you see it in the store or have some lying around the house. Make sure though you wear a protective mask and avoid contact with your eyes. Borax is perfectly safe as long as you are cautious.

How to use Borax

Since borax is a powder its really easy to use. Just spread the borax around the house on your carpet, and wood tile floors. Once it covers all the infected areas leave it for a few hour.

Usually I leave it between 3 and 6 hours. If you have a really deep carpet try using a broom and brushing over the carpet to help the borax sink in. This can kill any fleas that a buried deep in your carpeting.

Once its sat for long enough you can just vacuum it up. Continue doing this daily until you no longer find fleas in your home.

Buying flea traps can be expensive and sometimes entirely unnecessary. You can easily make homemade flea traps using items around you home that are just as effective as store bought flea traps.

In this article I’m going to teach you how to make various flea traps that can be placed around your home. These traps will do an amazing job of killing fleas

TV Trap

Metz_Axio_TVThis is my personal favorite flea trap. It works like magic and is really easy to do!

First thing you need to do is fill a 13×9 pan half full of water and soap to catch the fleas. You can place this in front of the TV .Then turn on the TV with the sound off, I suggest turning the TV to either Keeping up with the Kardashians, or The Jerry Springer Show. These shows will rot the fleas minds causing them to die faster.

While the fleas are getting caught in the trap you can go out on the town or just go to sleep and come back and take a look in the morning. Your mind will be blown by the amount of captured fleas.

Lamp Trap

vector___lamp_by_misteraibo-d4p4cyaThe lamp trap uses a lamp with a bright bulb and a bowl of soapy water to catch the fleas. To start, get a bowl and fill it with water then add a dash of soap and mix it around until the soap is mixed in. Try to prevent making bubbles when stirring the soap in. The soap will keep the fleas in the bowl, preventing them from escaping.

Once you have the bowl of soap and water take a lamp and place it on the ground above the bowl of soapy water. Make sure to angle the lamp so that the light shines onto the bowl.

If you don’t have a lamp you can also place the bowl against a wall underneath a night light. The light will draw the fleas to the bowl where they will be caught and die.

Cup Trap

cup-42427_640This really wont cost you any money at all. Just take a cup of water or a few depending on the severity of your infestation and fill them with water. Then place some dish soap or any kind of soap you have lying around. Mix the soap into the cup, once again try not to make bubbles. Place the cup into a window where the light is and let it sit.

You can use multiple different cups and place them throughout the house. I really suggest doing this if you have a really large flea infestation and wish to get rid of fleas as fast as possible.

Candle Trap

14136-illustration-of-a-candle-with-a-burning-flame-pvThe easiest of all the traps. Step one is you need to buy a thick candle. The second part is to light it where you wont have to leave it unattended. If you didn’t understand that I don’t know how to make it anymore simple. All you do is light a candle and stick it somewhere.

This is a very simple homemade flea trap and doesn’t take any effort. I don’t recommend using it though because its not a very effective trap.

Bowl Candle Trap

bowl-310064_640This is a very simple trap that uses a bowl of soapy water and a candle. Just fill a bowl with water and a little bit of soap. Place a small candle such as a tea candle in the center of the bowl. The fleas will jump towards the candle and get caught in the water like in the other Traps.

I’ve used this candle trap before and its worked really well for me so far. As long as you have light and a way to kill the fleas you can passively kill a large number of fleas.

Bath Trap

This isn’t the best homemade flea trap in the world but it does cover have a large area for the fleas to jump into.

For this trap just fill your bathtub up with soapy water, or water with vinegar mixed into it and place a candle in the center of the water. This trap sometimes works really well depending on where your bathtub is and if you have a low bath tub or a high one.

Other information

3404894430_197b580c0a_oIf you don’t to make your own flea trap you can always buy one from here. Store bought flea traps may work better depending on the size of your infestation.

This is a trap but my girlfriend does this to our dogs when they have fleas. Fleas have hard shells making them sometimes hard to kill. What you can do if you see a flea is pick it up and place it in a water bottle. If you leave the flea in the bottle and shake the bottle it will kill the fleas easily.

You can also roll the fleas between your fingers to kill them. This will break their legs preventing them from jumping to a host.

A common question I’m asked is if its possible to have flea eggs under your skin and if so how do I get rid of these eggs.

Luckily for us flea eggs under our skin isn’t too common though it does happen. The fleas that burrow into your skin are called Chigoe fleas or better known as Jiggers. Jiggers are commonly found in tropical and sandy areas.

Jiggers typically embed themselves into the soles of your feet when walking around a beach. They are so small though you really can’t feel them enter your skin.

Once in your skin though they can grow up to 2,000 times their original size. This makes your skin itchy or irritated. They are able to bury themselves so deep into your skin that you have to cut them out using a scalpel. Finally when they are inside your body the Jiggers will feed and breed inside of you. The jiggers can also cause Tungiasis.

Jiggers are not to be confused with Chiggers. Chiggers are a small red arachnid found all over the world. These pests do bite you and feed on your blood but they are completely different than Jiggers. If you think you have Chigger bites or want to know more check out this website here.

What is Tungiasis

Tungiasis is where female Chigoe Fleas burrow into the skin of their host. They usually target feet and ankles like most fleas. When the Chigoe Fleas bury themselves into your skin it causes severe infection.

Tungiasis is commonly described as having a white patch with a black dot in the center. The black dog is known as a lesson and the fleas use it to breath. The black dot can range anywhere from 4 to 10 millimeters.

How to Treat and Remove Jiggers

mqdefault

You need to go see a doctor. You can’t go to a store and rub a lotion on your skin that removes the fleas. You need to go a doctor so your feet can be washed and cleaned. Once your feet are washed a professional needs to remove the sand fleas from your skin.

Proper Jigger removal is important. Jiggers become irritating after the female chigoe flea swells under your skin. This can lead to ulcers. Removing these fleas as quickly as possible or it can lead to severe infection if the flea dies under your skin.

How do I know if I have Jiggers?

The first sign of having jiggers is a small black dot at the center of a red, irritated bump on your skin. This is the bite and where the jigger buried itself. In the later stage of having Jiggers it will be easy to identify Chigoe fleas because they are incredibly unique.

But to get relief, this is the fastest way to do it

Flea traps are a great way to take out fleas and treat and infestation. You can build traps at home with common household items or you can buy traps depending on the time you have and the quality you want. Electric flea traps are the most common traps. When I use flea traps I prefer to use electric flea traps.

 What are electric flea traps?

Electric flea traps are made from a sticky substance that’s placed under a warm light. The traps are plugged into a wall and set out to attract fleas. The Warmth of the light pulls the fleas towards the light where they will be caught in the sticky substance place underneath the light.

When making your own electric flea trap the sticky substance underneath the light is a mixture of water and soap. If you just put water under the light the fleas will be able to escape that is why you must put soap into it. Store bought flea traps are much easier to maintain.

When using a store bought flea trap its much easier to maintain. When you purchase a flea trap it comes with a replaceable tar like substance on a tray. When the tray is becoming to full just take out the tray then replace it with a new tray.

How to use an Electric flea trap

Not only are electric flea traps very effective but they’re also easy to use. The first thing you’ll need to do is find an electric outlet in an area around where your pet spends a lot of time whether its on the couch, your bedroom, or near their pet bed. Leave it there until the container becomes full. Once its full of fleas change out the sticky tray and replace it with a new once so you can continue trapping fleas.

Lamp Trap- The lamp trap just uses a lamp with a bright bulb and a bowl of soapy water to catch the fleas.

Angle the lamp so that the light shines onto the bowl.

If you don’t have a lamp you can also place the bowl against a wall underneath a night light. The light will draw the fleas to the bowl where they will be caught and die.

Paper fleas are a mythical office bug that many office workers believe make them itch while working. Despite many investigations though no paper fleas have ever been found. This usually occurs when office workers are dealing with large amounts of papers and files.

Do they exist?

As I stated above they are a myth. There have been extensive searches looking for these fleas in hopes of find the source to the mysterious itching that office workers have to deal with. Despite the desperate searches nothing has ever been found that proves the existence of paper fleas.

Where does the itching come from?

The itching and small bite like looking red marks are real and not imagined. This itching feels like small pinprick sensations on your body. They can be caused by a few things.

  • Insulation – Insulation is often used in office buildings and homes. This insulation typically contains fiber glass which can cause skin irritation when the fibers come in contact with clothes or skin.
  • Fabric Fibers – Small fibers from old carpets or furniture can also cause skin irritation
  • Shards of Paper – If you’re working in an office you’re likely handling paper a lot. These small paper shards are released into the air from the cutting or tearing of paper. This can cause irritation
  • Allergies – Lack of cleaning in an office space can lead to increased allergies due to accumulating dust and allergens.

How to stop the itching

You could start by contacting the building owner. There are some steps they can take to reduce the dust, allergens, and fabric fibers.

You can use a humidifier to reduce the dryness of an office space. You can also use moisturizer to reduce itching on your skin.

If there are bites on your skin its very possible that your office space could be infested by fleas. In this case you really should treat the infestation on your own in a workplace. I recommend calling an exterminator to take care of office infestations.

If you’re a business owner by all means take care of the infestation yourself. You can use my article on flea treatment to help you clear your office space of fleas.
